Traditions of health: 12 days of self-care

For many, vacation time means planning and caring for others. We fill the days with regular hustle and evening and packing, decorating and cooking. However, the holiday busy leaves little time to slow down and take care of yourself.

During this time of year, we encourage you and all of our Texas colleagues to do your best to take care of yourself while still giving to others. We recommend that you listen to your body and mind. The list below is to help you get ideas on how to stop and do something for yourself next month.

12 days of self-care

  1. Intentional YES! Take the time to do the things you love. Always think before you answer. Be intentional in your actions and words. Intentional behavior will positively affect your overall well-being, health and life.
  2. To be present. We often look back at pictures to remember or plan for the future. This year we ask you to be present. Spend a few minutes meditating and practicing mindfulness in the morning. Try turning off the electronics and unplugging for a while.
  3. Top up your body. Holidays are a busy time! While we are out, make every effort not only to supply your body with the nutrients it needs, but also to prepare food for the days you plan to stay. 4. Create your favorite playlist. Whether it’s a holiday list, sorted by genre or just one massive playlist – create your favorite! Playing your favorite songs is a great way to stay positive, have a dance party, or calm down when you feel overwhelmed.
  5. Read the book. Try a new genre, re-read an old favorite book or choose a book to help you grow. Spend only 20 minutes a day reading to feed your mind and soul.
  6. Create a diary of gratitude. Every morning, quickly write down one thing you are grateful for in your life. It can be a family member, a friend, a healthy snack, perfect weather or anything that will make you happy!

  9. Save time that matters. Use your time to be with what you care about most – with family, friends, your favorite pet and with you! Spend the time on something fun.
  10. Accept nature. Stroll around, visit the local farmers market, sit outside and read or take a trip to one of Texas parks.
  11. Fill up. What makes you feel good? Volunteering for something that means something to you, or donating to your favorite charity. Whatever it is, do it – on purpose!
  12. Join 2022 It’s Texas Community Challenge time. Our FREE, eight-week nationwide community challenge is a great way to start 2022. Keep your New Year’s resolutions and begin your journey of health with other Texans, competing for yourself, your employer, the community, or the school district.
